The World Athletics Ultimate Championship is a global track and field competition hosted by World Athletics. Designed to be a high-stakes, season-ending event, it takes place biennially in even-numbered years—fitting between the outdoor World Athletics Championships and the Summer Olympics.
The inaugural event is scheduled for September 11–13, 2026, at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary.
Key Features & Structure
- Fast-Paced Format: Designed to engage television audiences, the event compresses action into compact evening sessions lasting under three hours.
- Elite “Best of the Best” Field: Qualification is restricted to a small pool of elite athletes, featuring direct invites for current Olympic gold medalists, World Champions, and Diamond League winners, as well as top athletes in the World Athletics rankings.
- No Country Limits: Unlike the Olympics or standard World Championships, there are no limits on how many athletes from a single country can enter, allowing the absolute top competitors in each event to race.
- Record Prize Purse: The competition features a total prize purse of US$10 million, offering gold medalists $150,000—the largest single payout in track and field history.
- Streamlined Disciplines: The event concentrates on 28 core events (13 men’s, 13 women’s, and 2 relays), deliberately trimming longer events (such as the 10,000m and steeplechase) to keep the pacing quick.
