The history of the UEFA Champions League is a story of evolution from a simple knockout tournament for national champions to the premier club football competition in the world.
The competition can be divided into two main eras:
1. The European Champion Clubs’ Cup (1955โ1992)
- Foundation: The tournament was conceived by French sports journalist Gabriel Hanot and his newspaper L’รquipe. It was officially sanctioned by UEFA and launched in the 1955โ56 season as the European Champion Clubs’ Cup, or simply the European Cup.
- Original Format: It was a straight knockout tournament open only to the champions of Europe’s domestic leagues (plus the previous year’s winner).
- Inaugural Winner: The first final, in 1956, was won by Real Madrid, who defeated Stade de Reims 4-3 in Paris. Real Madrid went on to dominate the early years, winning the first five consecutive titles (1956โ1960).
- Early Evolution: Over time, the number of participating teams gradually increased, but the format remained primarily knockout rounds.
2. The UEFA Champions League (1992โPresent)
- The Rebrand: The competition underwent a major overhaul for the 1992โ93 season and was officially renamed the UEFA Champions League. This change was driven by commercialization and the desire to include more matches and top clubs.
- New Format: The key change was the introduction of a round-robin group stage (initially following some knockout rounds), replacing the purely knockout format of the past. The 1992โ93 season, won by Olympique de Marseille, was the first under the new name.
- Expansion (1990s): The format continued to expand in the later 1990s, most significantly in the 1997โ98 season, when it began to allow multiple entrants (runners-up) from the strongest domestic leagues, which fundamentally changed the nature of the tournament from a “champions only” cup. By the 1999-2000 season, the group stage expanded to include 32 teams.
- Modern Era (2000sโ2024): The format largely settled into the familiar structure of a 32-team group stage (eight groups of four) followed by a 16-team knockout phase. In 2021, the controversial away goals rule for the knockout stages was eliminated.
- Latest Evolution (2024โ25): The competition was restructured again, replacing the group stage with a single 36-team ‘league phase’ based on a Swiss model, which is then followed by a knockout phase. This marks the most significant change to the format since the 1990s expansion.
Real Madrid remains the most successful club in the history of the competition, combining their European Cup and Champions League titles
