What is T100 Triathlon?
The T100 Triathlon World Tour is a professional and amateur triathlon series organized by the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) in partnership with World Triathlon, the sport’s international governing body. The name “T100” refers to its unique 100km race format, which consists of:
- 2km Swim
- 80km Bike
- 18km Run
This distance is designed to be more spectator-friendly and faster-paced than traditional long-course triathlons, such as the Ironman and Ironman 70.3, balancing endurance with high-intensity racing.
The T100 is unique in several ways:
- Contracted Athletes: Unlike other major triathlon series where professionals can enter any race, the T100 contracts a select group of top-ranked male and female triathletes (typically 20 men and 20 women) to compete in the tour. This ensures a consistent, high-caliber field at every event.
- Points-Based Tour: Athletes earn points and prize money throughout the season, with a series of races culminating in a Grand Final where the T100 World Champions are crowned.
- Mass Participation: In addition to the professional races, the T100 events also include opportunities for amateur athletes (“age-groupers”) to participate, often on the same courses as the pros.
- Media Focus: The PTO has heavily invested in high-quality broadcasting and media coverage, aiming to elevate the sport and make it more accessible to a wider audience. This includes using data and storytelling to highlight the athletes and the race narrative.
History of the T100 Triathlon
The T100 Triathlon has a very recent but significant history, originating from the efforts of the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO).
- Formation of the PTO: The PTO was created with the goal of professionalizing the sport of triathlon and providing long-distance professional athletes with more stable income and a more compelling race structure.
- The PTO Tour: The PTO first launched a series of races under the name “PTO Tour” in 2022 and 2023. These events served as a test bed for the organization’s innovative approach to race management, athlete compensation, and broadcasting.
- The T100 Relaunch: In January 2024, the PTO and World Triathlon announced a major partnership and a relaunch of the series as the T100 Triathlon World Tour. This partnership officially recognized the T100 as “the official World Championship tour of long-distance triathlon.” The rebranding to T100 and the new 100km distance were part of a strategy to create a more streamlined and marketable product for fans and media.
Since its launch, the T100 has quickly become a major force in the triathlon world, attracting top talent and aiming to create a consistent, season-long narrative for the sport.
