The Supertri League is heading to Canada for the first time as they land in Toronto for a weekend of professional and mass participation racing at the Toronto Triathlon Festival.
Supertri is a global sports phenomenon that has revolutionized triathlon. It was founded in 2017 by three individuals who shared a passion for elevating the sport: Michael D’hulst, Leonid Boguslavsky, and Chris McCormack.
Here’s a breakdown of its history:
- Formation and Concept (2016-2017): Michael D’hulst and Chris McCormack, a four-time world champion, met while working on triathlon projects in Asia. They developed the concept for a more accessible and engaging triathlon format. A chance encounter with businessman Leonid Boguslavsky, who was inspired by McCormack’s book, led to the trio formally launching their venture. They aimed to transform triathlon from a niche, participant-led sport into a dynamic spectator experience.
- Test Event and Early Growth (2017): They held a successful one-off test event on Hamilton Island, which paved the way for an annual series, initially known as the “Championship Series” and later as “Supertri League.” Michael D’hulst became the permanent CEO. Supertri’s key differentiators were its short formats, tight broadcast times, stadium-like courses with technical elements, and a closed-league structure.
- Expansion and Innovation (2018-2019): The Championship Series quickly grew, with three events per series in 2018 and 2019. The company also moved its headquarters from Singapore to London in 2019.
- COVID-19 and the Birth of Supertri E (2020): When the COVID-19 pandemic led to event cancellations, Supertri innovated by creating an indoor Esports racing series. This became “Arena Games Triathlon,” now known as Supertri E. It debuted in Rotterdam in 2020 and became a highly successful and core part of the business.
- Move into Participation Events and Rebrand (2020-2024): Super League Triathlon began to expand into mass participation events, acquiring the Malibu Triathlon in 2020. This proved the concept of expanding short and accessible race formats for the general public. In 2023 and 2024, they acquired other major triathlons like Chicago Triathlon, New York City Triathlon, Long Beach Legacy Triathlon, Austin Triathlon, and Kerrville Triathlon. In February 2024, the company officially rebranded from Super League Triathlon to Supertri, with three clear pillars:
- Supertri League: Professional outdoor racing, known for its fast, tactical, and technical courses with the world’s best athletes competing in teams.
- Supertri E: Indoor Esports hybrid racing, a pioneering series that fuses real-life and virtual racing, including the Supertri E World Triathlon Championship.
- By Supertri: The mass participation brand, delivering urban short-course triathlon events for all levels of athletes.
Supertri continues to focus on being a challenger brand that redefines the sport, producing world-class experiences and content to entertain and inspire a growing community.
