The Billie Jean King Cup (formerly Fed Cup) is the premier international team competition in women’s tennis, often called the “World Cup of Tennis.”
The competition is structured as a four-tier pyramid, with the goal being to reach the Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
🎾 Competition Structure
The tiers of the tournament, from the lowest to the highest, are:
- Regional Groups (Groups I-IV): Teams compete for promotion within their regions (Americas, Asia/Oceania, Europe/Africa). Group I is the highest regional division, and the best-performing teams earn a spot in the Play-offs.
- Play-offs: These ties are contested by the teams that did not win their Qualifiers ties, along with the promoted teams from the Regional Group I events. Winners advance to the Qualifiers in the following year, while losers compete in Group I.
- Qualifiers: 18 teams compete in a round-robin format (6 groups of 3) over three days. The six group winners earn a place in the Finals. The remaining teams go to the Play-offs.
- The Finals: The apex of the pyramid. The best 8 teams in the world compete for the title.
🏆 The Finals Format
The most exciting part is the Finals, which currently feature eight teams competing in a knockout format (Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and Final).
The eight teams are:
- The six group winners from the Qualifiers.
- The defending champion nation.
- The host nation.
Tie Structure
In the Qualifiers, Play-offs, and Finals, a tie between two nations consists of three matches played as best-of-three tie-break sets:
- Singles Match 1: Nation A’s No. 2 player vs. Nation B’s No. 2 player.
- Singles Match 2: Nation A’s No. 1 player vs. Nation B’s No. 1 player.
- Doubles Match: A doubles match (can be any two players selected by the captain).
The nation that wins two out of the three matches wins the tie and advances in the knockout stage.
In the Finals, the Doubles match is always played at the Quarter-final and Semi-final stages, even if the result of the tie is already decided (2-0). However, in the Final, the doubles match is not played if the second singles match is decisive.
