The history of the “Luxembourg Ladies Tennis Masters” is an evolution of a long-running professional women’s tennis event in Luxembourg, organized by the International Women’s Tennis Promotion (IWTP).
The history can be divided into three main phases:
Phase 1: Exhibition Tournaments (1991โ1995)
- Foundation: The IWTP was founded in 1990 with the goal of promoting international women’s tennis in Luxembourg.
- Early Years: The first tournaments were held from 1991 to 1995 as invitation-only exhibition events at the CK Sportcenter in Luxembourg-Kockelscheuer.
- Notable Participants: Early winners included tennis legends like Jana Novotnรก and Martina Navratilova.
Phase 2: The WTA Tournament (“Luxembourg Open”) (1996โ2021)
- WTA Status: Beginning in 1996, the event transitioned into a fully-sanctioned WTA tournament, known as the Luxembourg Open (or various sponsored names like the BGL BNP Paribas Open).
- WTA Tiers: It began as a Tier III tournament (1996โ2004), was briefly promoted to Tier II (2005โ2007), and later became an International Series tournament (and eventually a WTA 250 event).
- Venue: It continued to be held at the Kockelscheuer Sport Centre.
- Key Champions: The tournament featured many world-class players, with crowd favorite Kim Clijsters holding the record for most singles wins with five titles (1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005). Other winners included Anke Huber, Mary Pierce, Jennifer Capriati, Ana Ivanovic, Victoria Azarenka, and Venus Williams.
- Conclusion: The last WTA event was held in 2021.
Phase 3: The “Luxembourg Ladies Tennis Masters” (2022โPresent)
- New Format: Following the final WTA event in 2021, the IWTP decided to change the format to continue its mission with a new concept.
- The Masters is Born: The Luxembourg Ladies Tennis Masters was conceived as an invitational-only tournament for eight internationally renowned players, often focusing on recently retired or former top-ranked WTA stars (a legends/masters-style event).
- First Edition: The first official Luxembourg Ladies Tennis Masters under the new format was held in October 2022 at the d’Coque sports center in Luxembourg-Kirchberg. Kim Clijsters won this inaugural edition, defeating Martina Hingis in the final.
- Subsequent Editions: Anett Kontaveit won the 2023 edition, and Kirsten Flipkens won the 2024 edition. The tournament continues to be held at d’Coque.
