The Warsaw Marathon is the oldest annual marathon in Poland, with a rich history that dates back to 1979. Held every year, typically on the last Sunday of September, it has become a staple of the Polish running calendar and a major international sporting event.
Key Milestones and Facts
- First Race: The inaugural Warsaw Marathon was held on September 30, 1979.
- Oldest in Poland: It holds the distinction of being the longest-running annual marathon in the country.
- Organization: The marathon is organized by the non-governmental organization Fundacja Maraton Warszawski (Warsaw Marathon Foundation).
- Course: The course is known for being relatively flat, with the notable exception of the ascent to the ลwiฤtokrzyski Bridge, making it a popular choice for runners aiming for a personal best. The route takes participants through historical and cultural landmarks, offering a scenic tour of the city.
- Sponsorship: In 2013, the Polish insurance company Powszechny Zakลad Ubezpieczeล (PZU) became the title sponsor, and the race was renamed the “PZU Warsaw Marathon.” It is currently sponsored by Nationale-Nederlanden.
- Polish National Championships: The men’s race in 2000 and the women’s race in 2012 were given the status of Polish Marathon National Championships.
- Growth and Participation: The marathon has seen a significant increase in participation over the years, with a notable jump in numbers after the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2025 edition is projected to have a record number of participants.
Course Records
- Men: The men’s course record is 2:08:17, set by John Kibet of Kenya in 2011.
- Women: The women’s course record is 2:28:35, set by Demissie Ayantu of Ethiopia in 2022.
Accompanying Races
In addition to the full 42.195 km marathon, the event has expanded to include other races, such as:
- A handbike marathon
- A 10-kilometer race (“High Five Race” and now “Pekao SA Warszawska Dycha”)
- Races for children and youth
The Warsaw Marathon is not just a race; it is a community event that blends athletic achievement with a celebration of the city’s history and culture. It is also one of the five marathons that make up the “Crown of Polish Marathons” program, along with the Dฤbno, Krakรณw, Poznaล, and Wrocลaw Marathons.
The 47th Nationale-Nederlanden Warsaw Marathon will be the biggest marathon in Polandโs history. For the first time ever in our country, 10,000 runners will cross the finish line of the royal distance!
During the last weekend of September, weโll also have: a 10K run, kidsโ races, the Sport&Fitness EXPO, and plenty of attractions for the local community!
