The history of the Munich Marathon (Generali Munich Marathon) primarily dates back to 1983, when the annual event was first established as a city marathon.
Key points in its history include:
- 1972 Olympics Inspiration: The marathon course often follows the historic route of the men’s marathon race held during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. The Olympic Stadium, where the 1972 race finished (and where Frank Shorter won gold), is frequently the starting and finishing point for the modern marathon.
- Official Start (1983): The annual city marathon was officially inaugurated in 1983.
- Growth and Decline: The race quickly grew, attracting both mass participation and elite international athletes, with over 6,500 finishers by the late 1980s. However, participation saw a significant drop after 1990, leading to a period of difficulty for the original organizers.
- Relaunch and Resurgence: After a period of change, the event saw renewed popularity when it returned to the scenic city streets and the Olympic Stadium course, with finisher numbers surpassing 5,000 by 2001 and reaching a record high of 9,041 marathon finishers in 2004.
- Modern Status: Today, the Generali Munich Marathon is one of the largest and most well-regarded running events in Germany, featuring the full marathon, a half marathon, a 10K run, and a marathon relay. It has been recognized as a World Athletics Gold/Elite Label Road Race.
- Course: The route is known for taking runners past many of Munich’s famous landmarks, such as the Siegestor, the English Garden, Marienplatz, and concluding with a finish inside the historic Olympic Stadium (though the course is occasionally rerouted for stadium works, as in 2024).
In 2025 the MARATHON MÜNCHEN by Brooks is getting an upgrade – more attractive, more dynamic and more exciting than ever before. The new one-lap course passes Munich’s top spots. From the Olympic Park via the Siegestor and Odeonsplatz to Marienplatz, every kilometre is an experience. A special highlight after the Isarhochufer is the Werksviertel – urban, modern and full of vibes. Simply run, enjoy and follow through.
The official name for the event in 2025 is the MARATHON MÜNCHEN by Brooks.
- Generali was the title sponsor for previous editions (which is why you often see the historical name “Generali Munich Marathon”).
- For the 2025 event, the organization changed following a re-tender by the City of Munich, and the running brand Brooks Running became the new presenting partner.
For the first time the half marathon starts in the Olympic Park and provides a strong start. The 10 KM RUN starts in the modern Werksviertel and brings even more urban dynamic.
