The Leuven Marathon 2026 Route

While the Leuven Marathon on April 19, 2026, is technically the first edition of an annual city marathon for Leuven, its history is deeply rooted in a massive sporting event that took place just one year prior.
Here is how the event evolved from a “one-off” championship into a permanent fixture:
🏛️ The Catalyst: European Running Championships 2025
The marathon didn’t appear out of thin air. It was born from the “unforgettable success” of the 2025 European Running Championships (held on April 12–13, 2025).
- A New Concept: This was the first time European Athletics held a standalone road running championship where elite athletes and 28,000 recreational runners competed on the same course at the same time.
- The Route: In 2025, the marathon actually started at the Royal Palace in Brussels and finished in Leuven. It became the largest marathon ever held in Belgium, with 12,500 participants for the full distance alone.+1
- The Winners: Italy’s Iliass Aouani (2:09:05) and Spain’s Fatima Ouhaddou (2:27:14) were crowned the first-ever European Running Champions on the streets of Leuven.
🌳 2026: From “Championship” to “City Legacy”
Following the 2025 event, the city of Leuven and organizer Golazo decided to create a lasting legacy.
- The Shift: Unlike the 2025 point-to-point race from Brussels, the 2026 Leuven Marathon is a circular race. Both the start and finish lines are now located at Parkpoort (Sportoase) in Leuven.
- The Forest Loop: To reach the full 42.195 km distance without starting in Brussels, the 2026 edition introduced a brand-new scenic loop through the Forests of Brabant (Heverleebos), blending the city’s historic center with its green outskirts.
🎓 A University Tradition
The history of running in Leuven is also inextricably linked to KU Leuven (one of the world’s oldest universities). For years, the university has fostered a “running culture” through events like the 24-urenloop (a 24-hour relay race). The new marathon has successfully tapped into this, with the university now providing official training programs specifically for the April event.
