The Prague Half Marathon (currently the Generali 1/2 Maraton Praha) has evolved from a small local race into one of the most prestigious road races in the world. Since its inception, it has been a cornerstone of the “RunCzech” series and a magnet for world-class distance runners.
Origins and Early Years
- 1999: The inaugural race took place with approximately 1,200 participants. It was established by the Prague International Marathon (PIM) organizing committee, led by Carlo Capalbo, who sought to make Prague a global running hub.
- The Course: The race is famous for its fast, flat course that winds through the historic center of Prague, crossing several bridges (including the Legion Bridge and Mánes Bridge) with views of Prague Castle and the Vltava River.
Global Prestige
The race is currently a World Athletics Elite Label Road Race, a distinction held by only the top-tier marathons and half marathons globally. For several years, it held the “Gold Label” status, making it a “must-run” for elite athletes seeking fast times.
Record-Breaking Moments
Prague has been the site of several historic performances:
- 2012: Ethiopia’s Atsedu Tsegay set a course record of 58:47, which at the time was the fourth-fastest half marathon in history.
- 2017: The race made global headlines when Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei broke four world records in a single run: the 10 km, 15 km, 20 km, and the Half Marathon world record ($1:04:52$).
Key Historical Milestones
| Year | Milestone |
| 1999 | First edition held with just over 1,000 runners. |
| 2010 | The race officially received the IAAF Gold Label status. |
| 2012 | Participation numbers surpassed 10,000 runners for the first time. |
| 2017 | Joyciline Jepkosgei sets the women’s world record on the Prague course. |
| 2024 | The 25th anniversary edition celebrated its silver jubilee. |
Cultural Impact
Beyond the elites, the race has become a massive public event. It is known for its “Battle of the Teams” format and the “Running Expo,” which draws thousands of visitors to the Výstaviště exhibition grounds. It serves as the traditional “spring opener” for the European distance running season.
