The history of the marathon event in Turin, which is currently known as the FIAT Torino City Marathon, has a long and somewhat complex evolution:
1. Early Roots (Pre-1991)
- Marathon-like Runs: A very early, marathon-like race of 35 km took place in Turin on October 31, 1897.
- First Official Marathon: The first proper marathon event in the city was organized in 1919.
- The Turin Marathon Gran Premio La Stampa: The city hosted the event for the inaugural 1934 European Athletics Championships the following year (1935), which was known by this name.
- Sporadic Events: Marathons were held occasionally over the decades, including a provincial-level one in 1974 and the Maratona di Primavera (Spring Marathon) in 1978 and 1979.
2. The Modern Era (1991โPresent)
The event as it is largely known today began in 1991 and has undergone several name and course changes:
- 1991โ1997 (Susa-Avigliana to Turin): The race was initially named Susavigliana and was a point-to-point race, starting from Susa or Avigliana and finishing in the center of Turin.
- 1998โPresent (Circuit Course): The race switched to a loop course that runs through Turin and its neighboring municipalities, with the start and finish typically located at Piazza Castello.
- Name Changes: The event has been known as the Turin Marathon (Maratona di Torino) and, more recently, the Torino City Marathon.
3. The FIAT Sponsorship
- The current name, FIAT Torino City Marathon, reflects the major sponsorship by the Italian automobile manufacturer, FIAT, which is historically and culturally significant to the city of Turin.
- The race course often passes by industries that have played a role in Turin’s history, connecting the race to the industrial heart of the city.
Key Characteristics
- Location: Turin, Italy. The start and finish are usually at the historic Piazza Castello.
- Timing: It is typically held in the late autumn (usually November or early December).
- Course: It is known for being a very fast course with minimal elevation change, making it one of the fastest marathon routes in Europe.
