Rugby Club Luxembourg (RCL) is the oldest rugby union club in Luxembourg, founded in May 1973 by a group of British expatriates. The club played its first competitive match in September of that year and has since become a major force in Luxembourgish rugby, serving as a primary source of players for the national team.
Early Years and League Play
Given Luxembourg’s lack of a domestic league, RCL has historically competed in the leagues of neighboring countries.
- French Leagues: From its founding until 1995, RCL played in the Alsace-Lorraine regional league in France. The club won the Alsace-Lorraine Cup in 1994.
- Belgian Leagues: In 1995, the club moved to the Belgian league system, playing in the second division. They won the Division Two final in 1998, earning promotion to the first division, where they competed until 2001.
- Return to France: The club returned to the French regional league system in 2001 and played there until 2009, winning their division in 2008.
- German Leagues: Since 2009, RCL has competed in the German Rugby-Bundesliga, achieving success with championship wins in the 2. Rugby-Bundesliga in 2016 and 2018.
