The ING Route du Vin is the oldest road race in Luxembourg, with its inaugural edition held on October 16, 1962. The idea for such an event was initially considered ambitious, as it was the first road race organized in the Grand Duchy and the surrounding region.
Early Years and Evolution
- First Edition (1962): The race saw 29 competitors reach the finish line, with Jean Aniset from Luxembourg being the first winner, completing the course in 1:11:58.
- Growing Participation: Initially, only experienced athletes took part. Participant numbers gradually increased, exceeding 100 in 1969 and reaching 662 finishers by 1983. The 1,000 participant mark was surpassed in 1990, and by 1999, over 1,500 runners finished the race.
- National Championships: Between 1962 and 1975, the Route du Vin served as the venue for the Luxembourg National Championship in the men’s long-distance race. Since 2001, the title of National Half Marathon Champion has been awarded to the top Luxembourgish athletes within the Route du Vin.
- Course Variations: While always run along the Moselle River amidst the grape harvest, the exact route has changed several times. Finishing points included Wormeldange, Grevenmacher, and Remich.
- Current Route: The current course is a round trip starting and finishing in Remich, heading towards Stadtbredimus and then back through Remich in the direction of Schengen before the final return to Remich. This route is officially approved by AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races), making records set on this course eligible for world performance lists.
- Sponsorship: Currently sponsored by ING Luxembourg, the race is known as the ING Route du Vin.
Key Historical Points
- The race’s name, “Route du Vin,” French for “Wine Route,” reflects the competition’s setting alongside the Moselle River, a significant wine-producing region.
- Only three Luxembourgish athletes have won the men’s race: Jean Aniset (1962), Thรฉo Bock (1972), and Justin Gloden (1980).
- Since 2001, a children’s race called “Route du Jus de Raisin” (Grape Juice Route) has also been part of the event.
- In 2024, a team relay option was introduced, allowing teams of three runners to cover the half-marathon distance in stages. Additionally, homologated 5 km and 10 km courses were introduced in 2022.
The ING Route du Vin has grown from a small local race to a prestigious international half-marathon, attracting both elite athletes and recreational runners to the scenic Moselle region of Luxembourg.
