This graphic illustrates the 36-team single-league table format used in European club football competitions (such as the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League), showing how teams advance to the knockout stages based on their final standings.
Context & Meaning of the Graphic
- 36 Teams in One League: Instead of splitting clubs into small group stages (like 8 groups of 4), all 36 participating teams rank together in one single overall league table.
- Pre-Season / Initial State: Every team listed currently shows 0 for Matches Played (P), Goal Difference (GD), and Points (PTS). Teams are listed in alphabetical order before fixtures begin.
The Three Qualification Zones (Sidebar Legend)
- Top 8 Positions (Positions 1–8): “Straight to R16”
- Teams finishing in the top 8 automatically qualify directly for the Round of 16 (knockout phase).
- Middle 16 Positions (Positions 9–24): “Knockout Phase Play-Off Places”
- Teams finishing from 9th to 24th enter a two-legged play-off round.
- The 8 winners of these play-off matches advance to join the top 8 teams in the Round of 16.
- Bottom 12 Positions (Positions 25–36): “Elimination Places”
- Teams finishing in 25th place or lower are completely eliminated from European competition for the season (there is no drop-down into lower-tier European tournaments).
