The BGL Ligue is the highest level of football in Luxembourg. It is officially known as the National Division (French: Division Nationale; Luxembourgish: Nationaldivisioun), with the BGL Ligue name coming from a sponsorship deal with the bank BGL BNP Paribas.

Early Beginnings: The competition was first held in the 1909–10 season. For a long time, it was known by various names, including the “Luxembourgish Championship” and the “Premier Division,” before being named the “National Division” in 1957.
Early Dominance: In the early history of the league, clubs like Jeunesse Esch and Stade Dudelange were highly successful. Jeunesse Esch holds the record for the most league titles, with 28 championships.
Recent Development: In recent years, the league has seen a significant push for development. While it is not a fully professional league, many clubs have invested heavily in foreign players and young talent. This has led to an improvement in the quality of play and a rise in the international standing of Luxembourgish football.
The Rise of F91 Dudelange: Since the turn of the millennium, F91 Dudelange has become the dominant force in the BGL Ligue. The club has won numerous league titles and has been a key player in the recent growth of the sport in Luxembourg. In 2018, they made history by becoming the first Luxembourgish team to reach the group stage of a major European competition (the UEFA Europa League), a significant milestone for the country’s football.
