🇫🇷 History of the Coupe de France de Cyclo-Cross
The Coupe de France de Cyclo-Cross is an annual cyclo-cross racing series in France, serving as a significant domestic competition and a qualifier for the French National Championships.
Here are the key historical milestones:
- Founding Year: The series for Men’s Elite riders was first established in 1983.
- Initial Winner (Men): The inaugural winner of the overall classification was Patrice Thévenard (FRA).
- Women’s Competition: The competition for Women’s Elite riders began significantly later, in 1999.
- Initial Winner (Women): The first winner of the Women’s overall classification was Laurence Leboucher (FRA), who went on to become the rider with the most wins in the women’s category (5 wins).
- Most Dominant Rider (Men): The record for the most overall wins in the Men’s competition is held by Francis Mourey (FRA) with an impressive 12 victories.
- International Participation: For many years, the competition was exclusively reserved for French riders. This rule was changed, and the series was opened to international riders in 2017. This change has since seen non-French riders win the overall series, such as Gerben Kuypers (BEL) in 2022.
- Series Structure: The series typically consists of several races (or rounds) held throughout France, usually starting in mid-October and concluding in mid-December.
The Coupe de France de Cyclo-Cross remains a crucial event for French cyclo-cross and continues to attract hundreds of participants across various categories, including Masters, U17, U19, U23, and Elite.
