Since 2018, cycling in all its forms has been celebrated every 3 June on United Nations’ World Bicycle Day. This year, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and the UCI World Cycling Centre (WCC) – the Federation’s training and education centre in Aigle, Switzerland – are proposing several events to the general public to encourage people of all ages and fitness levels around the world to get on their bikes.
Happy World Bicycle Day 2026! Officially established by the United Nations and celebrated every year on June 3, this day highlights the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable, clean, and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation.
Major cycling organizations, cities, and pro tours are leveraging the day to push for better infrastructure, sustainability, and health.
🚴♂️ Key Themes & Initiatives
1. The Tour de France “Green” Push
With the pro cycling season shifting into high gear, the Tour de France has tied its Mai à Vélo (May on Bikes) and World Bicycle Day initiatives together. They are heavily promoting their “Venez en mode vert” (Come in green mode) campaign, actively encouraging fans to ditch cars and travel to race stages via bikes, trains, or carpooling. They have also expanded secure bicycle parking at every single stage and continue their initiative of donating thousands of balance bikes to young children to foster early cycling literacy.
2. Urban Infrastructure & The “5 km” Challenge
Global focus remains heavily on infrastructure and urban planning. While European countries like France have reported massive surges in dedicated cycling networks (up over 14% recently), data highlights a stubborn urban habit: nearly 60% of commutes under 5 kilometers are still made by car. Activists and city planners are using World Bicycle Day to challenge commuters to swap short drives for a pedal-powered ride.
3. Health, Climate, and Community
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN continue to champion the bicycle as a premier tool for:
- Physical & Mental Health: Combatting non-communicable diseases and reducing stress.
- Climate Action: De-coupling population growth in cities from rising carbon emissions.
- Social Equity: Providing a low-cost, democratic tool for mobility.
🌍 How People Are Celebrating
- Critical Mass & Community Rides: Major cities worldwide are hosting group rides this week. For example, massive community gatherings and night/early morning rides are taking place across metropolitan hubs from Europe to Asia.
- Bike-to-Work Week: Many workplaces are offering incentives, free breakfast, or tune-ups for employees who commute on two wheels.
- DIY Maintenance Workshops: Local bike shops and co-ops are running free clinics teaching basic safety checks, tire changes, and brake adjustments.
Did you know? The UN chose June 3 because the bicycle has been in use for over two centuries, serving as a uniquely durable and versatile tool that fosters environmental stewardship and health.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), safe infrastructure for walking and cycling is also a pathway for achieving greater health equity.
