The UCI Road World Championships CM 2025 hold a significant place in the history of cycling for several key reasons:
A Historic First for Africa
- The 2025 UCI Road World Championships, held in Kigali, Rwanda, from September 21 to 28, is a momentous occasion as it marks the first time in the history of the event that the championships have been hosted on the African continent.
- This event is seen as a major step in the globalization of cycling and provides an opportunity and a source of inspiration for a new generation of African riders.
New Categories and Challenges
- For the first time, the championships will feature separate, standalone races for the Women Under-23 category. While U23 women’s world titles have been awarded since 2022, they previously competed alongside the Elite women.
- The courses themselves are known for their extreme difficulty. The event is hosted in Kigali, a city known as the “land of a thousand hills.” The high altitude (1850 meters) and significant elevation gain, particularly in the men’s elite race (over 5400 meters of climbing), make the 2025 championships one of the most challenging in history.
Event Details
- The championships will feature 13 events, including six road races, six individual time trials, and a mixed team relay.
- The elite men’s road race will be a grueling 267.5 km, with the elite women’s and men’s U23 races covering 164.6 km.
- The individual time trials will take place on a hilly course, with the elite men’s course being 40.6 km and the elite women’s 31.2 km.
The 2025 UCI Road World Championships are more than just a cycling competition; they represent a landmark event that is expanding the sport’s reach and creating new opportunities on a global scale.
