The Schleck Gran Fondo is a cycling event born from the passion and career of one of Luxembourg’s most famous professional cyclists: Fränk Schleck.
Here are the key historical details:
- Founder: The event was initiated by Fränk Schleck himself.
- Motivation: After ending his 13-year professional cycling career after the 2016 season, Fränk Schleck developed the plan to set up a Gran Fondo on his personal training roads. This was a way for him to share his passion and the beautiful cycling routes of Luxembourg (especially the Moselle region) with a wider audience.
- First Edition: The Schleck Gran Fondo held its successful first edition in 2017.
- Location: It takes place in Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxembourg.
- Status: It quickly became an internationally recognized event, serving as a qualifier for the UCI Gran Fondo World Series, which allows amateur cyclists to compete for a spot at the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships.
- Organization: It is organized by Schleck X-Perience SA (Fränk Schleck’s company) in cooperation with the local cycling club ACC Contern.
Essentially, the history of the event is rooted in Fränk Schleck’s post-retirement plan to bring a high-quality, international-level cycling experience to his home country’s roads.
The Schleck Gran Fondo offers two main routes, allowing cyclists of varying abilities to participate, with both courses starting and finishing in Mondorf-les-Bains.

Here are the typical distances and characteristics:
| Route Name | Distance | Total Elevation Gain (D+) | Description | UCI Qualifier Status |
| Gran Fondo | approx 160 km | approx 2,200 – 2,400$ m | The challenging, long course. It takes riders through the scenic Moselle region of Luxembourg and the tougher climbs of the Mullerthal (Luxembourg’s “Little Switzerland”). | Qualifier for Men (most age groups) |
| Medio Fondo | approx 90 km | approx 1,100 – 1,400$ m | A shorter, yet still challenging route that shares the start and finish with the Gran Fondo but takes a shortcut in the middle to reduce the overall distance and climbing. | Qualifier for Women (all age groups) and Older Men (e.g., 65+) |
Key Route Features:
- Scenery: Both routes feature picturesque landscapes, including vineyards along the Moselle River and dense forests.
- Climbing: The course is characterized by a repetition of short, steep climbs rather than long mountain passes, which is typical of racing in the region.
- UCI World Series: The event is a qualifying race for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, which dictates that certain age and gender categories must race the longer or shorter distance to qualify.
