The NXT Classic (officially the Volta NXT Classic) for men is one of the most storied one-day races in the Netherlands. Held in the rolling hills of South Limburg, it is often nicknamed “the little brother of the Amstel Gold Race” due to its similar terrain and proximity on the cycling calendar.
While the women’s event holds a 1.2 classification, the men’s race has long been established as a UCI 1.1 event.
Historical Evolution
The race has undergone several identity shifts since its inception over 50 years ago:
- 1973–1992 (The Amateur Era): Originally known as the Hel van het Mergelland (Hell of the Mergelland), it began as an amateur competition.
- 1993–2004 (Professional Transition): The race turned professional in 1993. It was during this period that it began to gain international traction, joining the UCI Europe Tour in 2005.
- 2012–2023 (The Volta Limburg Era): The race was rebranded as the Volta Limburg Classic in 2012. It solidified its reputation as a “puncheur’s paradise,” featuring iconic climbs like the Gulperberg and Eyserbosweg.
- 2024–Present (The NXT Era): To modernize its image, the race was renamed the Volta NXT Classic.
The UCI 1.1 Status
The 1.1 classification is a significant tier in professional cycling. It means:
- High-Level Competition: The race can invite UCI WorldTeams (up to 50% of the field), ProTeams, and Continental teams.
- Strategic Calendar Placement: Held in late March or early April, it serves as a critical bridge between the cobbled classics of Flanders and the hillier Ardennes classics.

Today’s Result: In the edition held today (April 4, 2026), the young Dutch talent Tibor Del Grosso took a spectacular home victory, continuing Alpecin–Premier Tech’s dominant streak in this specific race.
The Course
The race traditionally starts and ends in Eijsden. The men’s route covers roughly 190–200 km, featuring nearly 30 climbs and a total elevation gain of over 3,000 meters. The constant twisting roads and “Belgian-style” short, steep hills make it a race of attrition where only the strongest survive for the final sprint on the Diepstraat.
