The National Road Championships are annual cycling events held by individual countries worldwide to determine their national champions in road bicycle racing. Sanctioned by their respective national governing bodies and recognized by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), these races are a major highlight of the professional cycling calendar.

📅 When Do They Take Place?

Because the cycling season varies by region, National Championships are split throughout the year:

• The June Block: The vast majority of nations—including those in Europe, North America, and parts of Asia—hold their championships in late June, typically the weekend right before the Tour de France. The UCI creates a specific break in the professional racing calendar so the world’s top riders can travel home to compete.
• The Southern Hemisphere (January/February): Countries like Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa hold their championships early in the year during their summer months.

🚴‍♂️ What Are the Events?

Most nations host competitions across different age groups (Juniors, Under-23, and Elite) for both men and women. The two primary disciplines are:

1. The Road Race: A mass-start event where riders compete over a long, grueling distance. The first across the finish line wins.
2. The Individual Time Trial (ITT): Often called the “race of truth.” Riders set off one by one at timed intervals to complete a course as fast as possible against the clock.

🎽 The Ultimate Prize: The National Jersey

Winning a national title is a massive honor in cycling because of the National Champion Jersey.

The Rule: For the next 12 months following their victory, the winning rider is authorized (and required) to wear a specially designed jersey featuring their country’s national flag or colors during any race in that specific discipline.

• If a rider wins the Road Race, they wear the jersey during regular road stages.
• If they win the Time Trial, they wear it only during time trial stages.
• Once their reigning year is over, former champions often get to keep a permanent reminder of their achievement, such as distinct bands of their national colors on the cuffs and collars of their standard team kits.
