The Mallorca 312 OK Mobility Gran Fondo has evolved from a local challenge into one of Europe’s most prestigious amateur cycling events. Its history is marked by significant route changes, rapid growth in scale, and a consistent connection to professional cycling legends.
1. Origins and the “Full Circle” (2010–2015)
The event was first held in 2010. For its first seven years, the “312” name was literal in two ways: it was 312 kilometers long and consisted of one continuous lap around the entire perimeter of the island.
- The Route: Starting in Playa de Muro, riders headed west through the mountains before circling south toward Palma and back up the east coast.
- Open Roads: In these early years, the race was held on open roads with traffic, which limited the number of participants compared to today.
2. The Shift to Closed Roads (2016)
A pivotal moment occurred in 2016. To enhance safety and accommodate growing demand, the organizers moved the event to fully closed roads.
- The “Figure Eight”: Because closing the entire island’s perimeter (including the busy roads around Palma) was logistically impossible, the route was redesigned. It shifted to a more mountain-heavy “loop” format concentrated in the Serra de Tramuntana (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and the northern part of the island.
- Increased Difficulty: While the original perimeter route was flatter in the second half, the new closed-road version introduced significantly more climbing, reaching approximately 5,050 meters of elevation gain.
3. Expansion and “Milestone Series”
As the event’s reputation grew, it expanded its reach:
- The Three Distances: To make the event accessible to more than just ultra-endurance riders, organizers introduced shorter variations: the 225 km and 167 km routes.
- Record Sell-outs: What once took months to fill now sells out in minutes. For the 2026 edition, all 8,500 bib numbers were claimed almost instantly upon registration opening.
- Global Brand: The race is now the flagship of the “Milestone Series,” which includes similar Gran Fondos in the UK, Germany, and Sweden.
4. Professional Pedigree
The Mallorca 312 has a tradition of “Honorary Number 312” bibs, awarded to legendary professional cyclists who ride alongside the amateurs. Historical participants include:
- Miguel Indurain (5-time Tour de France winner)
- Alberto Contador
- Jan Ullrich
- Sean Kelly
- Annemiek van Vleuten (2024 honoree)
- Ivan Basso and Joseba Beloki
Today, the event is as much a festival as it is a race, featuring a massive finish-line “Pasta Party,” live music, and a professional-grade Expo that takes over Playa de Muro for the week leading up to the start.
