L’Étape Slovenia by Tour de France is a relatively recent addition to the global series of amateur cycling events that offer participants a chance to experience the feel of the world’s most famous professional cycling race.
Here’s a brief history of the event:
- First Edition: The first L’Étape Slovenia by Tour de France took place in 2022. The inaugural event was held in Kranj, which has served as the host city ever since.
- Purpose: The event is designed to be a “personal sporting challenge and tourist adventure” for amateur cyclists. It allows them to ride on traffic-free roads in the Gorenjska region of Slovenia, replicating the experience of a Tour de France stage.
- Inspiration: The event’s creation and popularity are heavily influenced by the success of Slovenian cyclists on the international stage, particularly Primož Roglič and Tadej Pogačar, who have become household names in the world of professional cycling. These athletes have put Slovenia in the limelight of the cycling world and boosted the country’s cycling culture.
- Event Format: L’Étape Slovenia typically includes two main distances: a longer “Race” course and a shorter “Ride” course. It is a two-day festival that often includes family and children’s rides on the Saturday, with the main events for amateur cyclists taking place on Sunday.
- Ambassador: The event has been endorsed by prominent Slovenian cyclists, with Matej Mohorič serving as an ambassador, often riding with participants to encourage them.
