L’Étape Romania is part of the global L’Étape Series by Tour de France, which offers amateur cyclists the chance to experience a Tour de France-like event in their home country. The series was created in 1993, and Romania joined in 2022, becoming the 20th country to host a race.
History of the Event
L’Étape Romania is an annual cycling event held in Bucharest, typically at the end of August. The race routes are designed to take cyclists through the city’s iconic streets and past historical landmarks, such as the Palace of Parliament, the Arch of Triumph, and Calea Victoriei. The event is organized by MPG Romania, a sports marketing and event management company.
The event is designed to be accessible to cyclists of all levels, from families and amateurs to seasoned competitors. It typically offers three main routes of varying difficulty:
- The Race: The longest and most challenging route, usually around 85 km.
- The Ride: A medium-distance route, typically around 42 km.
- City Adventure: A short route, around 14 km, often open to children and less experienced riders.
The event also includes a “Race Village” in Constitution Square, which serves as a festival-like atmosphere with a cycling expo, food and relaxation areas, and sponsor activations.
