La Bernard Thรฉvenet is a popular French “cyclosportive” (a long-distance organized cycling event) held annually in the Saรดne-et-Loire department of Burgundy. It serves as both a challenging sporting event and a tribute to one of Franceโs most beloved cycling legends, Bernard Thรฉvenet.
1. The Inspiration: Bernard Thรฉvenet
To understand the race, one must look at the man it honors. Bernard Thรฉvenet, nicknamed “Nanard,” is a giant of French cycling history.
- The “Merckx-Slayer”: He is most famous for winning the Tour de France in 1975, where he famously ended the era of the “Cannibal,” Eddy Merckx. He won the Tour again in 1977.
- Local Roots: Unlike many stars who move to big cities, Thรฉvenetโs identity is deeply tied to his birthplace in Burgundy. He grew up in the hamlet of Le Guidon (which literally means “The Handlebar”) in Saint-Julien-de-Civry.
- Career: Beyond his two Yellow Jerseys, he won the Critรฉrium du Dauphinรฉ Libรฉrรฉ twice and later served as its race director.
2. History and Purpose of the Cyclo
The event was established to celebrate Thรฉvenet’s career and promote cycling in his home region.
- The Route: The race is designed to take participants over the “training grounds” of Thรฉvenetโs youth. The hilly, verdant landscape of the Charolais and Brionnais regions provided the natural resistance that forged him into a world-class climber.
- Evolution: Over the years, it has grown from a local club gathering to a major event on the French cycling calendar, now attracting hundreds of participants (capped at around 650 to maintain a friendly, manageable atmosphere).
- Modern Era: Today, the race is based in Vitry-en-Charollais. It is known for its “convivial” (friendly) spirit, often ending with a large communal meal featuring local Burgundy specialties like Charolais beef and AOP goat cheese.
3. The Modern Event Structure
The “Cyclo” typically offers three distinct routes to cater to different skill levels:
- La Bernard Thรฉvenet (The Grand Course): Usually around 140 km with roughly 2,000 meters of elevation gain. It often features the steep Montagne de Dun, which has gradients reaching 18%.
- La Brionnaise (Medium Course): Approximately 100 km with about 1,300 meters of elevation, focusing on the rolling hills of the Brionnais countryside.
- La Mado (The Discovery/Rando): A shorter route (around 60-65 km) intended for cycle-tourists and e-bike users who want to enjoy the scenery without the competitive pressure.
4. A Gathering of Champions
A unique historical aspect of this event is the presence of Thรฉvenet himself. He is almost always at the start and finish lines, often accompanied by other legends of his era (such as Bernard Hinault or Christian Prudhomme, the director of the Tour de France) to sign autographs and hand out trophies.
