The Giro della Toscana is a historic road cycling race held annually in Tuscany, Italy. Its history can be broken down into several distinct phases, marked by changes in name and format.
Early History (1923 – 2014)
- Establishment: The race was first held in 1923 under the name “Giro di Toscana.”
- Format: For the majority of its history, it was a one-day classic.
- UCI Europe Tour: From 2005 to 2014, the race was a 1.1 event on the UCI Europe Tour.
- Hiatus: The race was not held in 2015.
The Memorial Alfredo Martini Era (2016 – Present)
- Rebirth: The race returned in 2016 with a new name and a new format: Giro della Toscana – Memorial Alfredo Martini. This name change was made to honor Alfredo Martini, a revered figure in Italian cycling.
- New Format: The race was restructured from a one-day event into a two-day or three-race challenge held consecutively. Each race awards points, and the rider with the most points wins the overall classification.
The Significance of Alfredo Martini
Alfredo Martini (1921โ2014) was a professional cyclist and, more notably, a legendary coach of the Italian national cycling team. His contributions to the sport are what the “Memorial” portion of the race name commemorates.
- Cycling Career: Martini rode professionally from 1941 to 1957. He won a stage of the Giro d’Italia in 1950 and finished third overall in that year’s edition.
- Coaching Legacy: He served as the head coach of the Italian national team for 22 years, from 1975 to 1997. During his tenure, the Italian team won six gold medals at the UCI Road World Championships with five different riders. He is highly respected for his wisdom, moral character, and his role in guiding some of Italy’s greatest cyclists.
The Giro della Toscana – Memorial Alfredo Martini is a significant event in the professional cycling calendar, paying homage to a true giant of the sport while maintaining its legacy as a key race in the heart of Italy’s cycling culture.
