“Chiara Consonni wins the second stage of the Giro d’Italia Women”

On July 8, 2024, Chiara Consonni (UAE Team ADQ) secured victory on the second stage of the Giro d’Italia Women. The race covered 110 kilometers south of Lake Garda. The total difference in altitude was no more than 450 meters¹².

The stage was dominated by a breakaway, Ana Vitória “Tota” Magalhães (BePink-Bongioanni). Together with Alessia Missiaggia (Top Girls Fassa Bortolo), she formed an escape group just seven kilometers after the start. Magalhães broke away from her companion on the first of two climbs to Cavriani in the final circle and stayed ahead of the peloton for a long time. She was only caught in the penultimate kilometer. A last-minute attack by Anouska Koster (Uno-X Mobility) was stopped 500 meters before the finish. Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) started her sprint from the slipstream of Mylène de Zoete (Ceratizit-WNT) and took the lead. But Consonni jumped off the wheel of the world champion and overtook her in the final meters to take the win. Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) retains the maglia rosa as overall leader after a safe finish in the second stage¹⁴.
