On Sunday, 4 May, St. Wendel will be all about running: the Globus Marathon will take place for the 17th time and will once again attract numerous athletes to the city centre. In addition to the many competitions for different ability levels, the visit of Olympic and biathlon world champion Denise Herrmann-Wick will attract special attention this year.

The marathon offers suitable routes for every age group: Ambitious athletes compete over the classic marathon distance of 42.195 kilometres. This runs in two laps through the city centre and over a flat, asphalted course with four turning points. Alternatively, there is a half marathon over 21.1 kilometres to choose from. The 10-kilometre run can be run individually or as a relay in a 4×10-kilometre format.

Beginners can try their hand at the 5-kilometre hobby run, which is being offered again after its successful introduction last year. Children from the age of six can also take part: The kids’ marathon over around one kilometre focuses on fun – without timekeeping, but with a medal and start number “1” for each child.

The start and finish area is Bahnhofstraße, which is transformed into a festival mile for running on the day of the event. Spectators will experience a mixture of a lively city centre atmosphere and natural sections of the course. There will be refreshment stations with drinks and fruit every five kilometres along the route.

Mayor Peter Klär, himself a participant in the half marathon, also emphasises the importance of the event: ‘The Globus Marathon marks the start of the many events that give the sports town of St. Wendel its name. And the marathon in particular demonstrates a characteristic that unites these events: they bring the citizens of St. Wendel together. Whether on the course or off it, in the preparation, realisation and the great or very personal success at the end – togetherness, ambition and joy are always the top priorities here in St. Wendel.’

The evening before, on 3 May, Denise Herrmann-Wick will be giving personal insights into her career at the Alsfassen Cultural Centre. Under the title ‘Courage to change’, she will describe her career from cross-country skiing to biathlon and international success from 7 pm.

On the day of the marathon, the top athlete will not only fire the starting gun for the children’s run, but will also sign the city’s Golden Book. She will be available to meet her fans in person at an autograph session.
