The Zurich Marathon has a history spanning several decades, with a break in between initial and current iterations. Here’s a breakdown:
First Era (1984-1989):
- A marathon was held in Zurich for six years.
- Winners during this period included athletes like:
- Men: Werner Betz (GER), R. Leutenegger (SUI), J. Poli (SUI), and others. (Note: Information on all winners from this period may require further specific searches).
Second Era (2003-Present):
- Initiation: Bruno Lafranchi spearheaded the revival of the Zurich Marathon in 2002.
- Annual Event: Since 2003, the Zurich Marathon has been held annually in April.
- Growth and Popularity: It has become the largest and fastest marathon in Switzerland, often selling out with over 18,000 registrations across its various race categories (Marathon, Half Marathon, 10k).
- Organization: Since 2018, Human Sports Management AG has been the organizer and owner of the Zurich Marathon.
- Route Evolution: The course has seen some changes over the years. Initially, the finish line was at Mythenquai. From 2025 onwards, the finish line will be at the Sechseläutenplatz in Zurich. The turning point of the marathon is in Meilen, along Lake Zurich. Efforts have been made to reduce the number of turns in the final kilometers through the inner city, with a notable change in 2007.
- Additional Races: To celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2012, the 10 km Cityrun (now Z10 – Zurich 10k) was introduced, following the first 10 km of the marathon course. A Half Marathon was added in 2021. All three races are held on the same day.
- Course Measurement: The marathon course is officially measured according to AIMS and IAAF rules, with the latest measurement in January 2023.
- Fast Course: The course is generally considered flat, offering potential for personal best times.
Key Historical Points:
- 2022: Tadesse Abraham (SUI) set the fastest marathon time on Swiss soil (2:06:38) at the Zurich Marathon.
- Neujahrsmarathon Zürich: It’s important to note that there is also a separate “Neujahrsmarathon Zürich” held annually on January 1st since 2005. This is a different event from the main Zurich Marathon in April.
The Zurich Marathon has established itself as a significant event on the international running calendar, attracting both professional and amateur athletes to experience the scenic route through the city and along Lake Zurich.
