The history of Paris-Roubaix Femmes is still relatively young, as the first official edition only took place in 2021. Here are the key points about the origins and development of this important race in women’s cycling:
The long wait:
Although the men’s Paris-Roubaix has been held since 1896 and is one of the most prestigious one-day races, it took over 120 years for an official women’s version to be created.
In the past, there were unofficial races or sections for women in Paris-Roubaix events, but no fully-fledged, professional event under the same name and with comparable significance.
The desire for a women’s race grew steadily in the course of the professionalization and popularization of women’s cycling.
The premiere in 2021:
Finally, on October 2, 2021, the first official edition of Paris-Roubaix Femmes was held.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the race took place in the fall and not in the spring as usual.
The first route covered 116.4 kilometers from Denain to Roubaix and included 17 cobbled sectors over a total of 29.2 kilometers, including some of the infamous pavés that are also ridden in the men’s race.
Britain’s Lizzie Deignan (then Trek-Segafredo) made history by becoming the first female winner of Paris-Roubaix Femmes. She won after an impressive solo ride.
The following years:
2022: The second edition took place in April and covered a longer distance of 124.7 kilometers with 17 cobblestone sectors. Italian champion Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Segafredo) secured victory after a strong performance.
2023: The third edition saw a surprise winner. Canadian Alison Jackson (EF Education-TIBCO-SVB) won after a clever ride out of a breakaway group. The race covered 145.4 kilometers and once again included challenging cobblestone passages.
2024: The fourth edition was won by world champion Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime). She prevailed in the sprint of a small leading group in the Roubaix velodrome. The race covered 148.5 kilometers and included 17 cobblestone sectors.
2025: The fifth edition is planned for April 12.
Importance and future:
Paris-Roubaix Femmes has quickly established itself as one of the most important and prestigious one-day races in women’s cycling.
Its inclusion in the UCI Women’s WorldTour calendar underlines its importance.
The race offers the riders a unique challenge through the demanding cobbled sectors and helps to demonstrate the strength, endurance and skill of the athletes.
It contributes significantly to the development and rising popularity of women’s cycling and inspires a new generation of female cyclists.
Although the history of Paris-Roubaix Femmes is still young, it has already produced iconic moments and impressive performances and promises to remain a fixture on the cycling calendar for many years to come.
The Paris-Roubaix Espoirs race will take place tomorrow on 13 April 2025
