Ultra cycling, 24 hours time trial world championships in Borrego Springs in California – November 1, 2024

6/12/24 “World Time Trial Championships”, 24hr (2024)

November 1 @ 5:00 am – November 3 @ 5:00 pm PDT

A popular and highly competitive event, run in the flat desert east of San Diego, CA.  The course runs on an 18mi, mostly-flat loop, changing to a shorter loop for the last portion of the available time.  The event often fills, so registration as early as possible is advised. (Note, while the name of this event includes the wording as world championship, it is not sanctioned as such by WUCA and the bonus points associated with that status do not apply.)

Among the many fast racers in the 24-Hour Solo Male age 40-49 category of this year’s 6-12-24 Hour World Time Trial Championships (WTTC), is former elite road racer Ralph “Dizzy” Diseviscourt (Luxembourg). The 2-time finisher of the Race Across America (RAAM) knows a thing or two about going fast for 24 hours—in 2020 he rode 568.79 miles/915.39 kilometers on an outdoor track to set a new world record.

This will be Dizzy’s second appearance at WTTC; his first was in 2022 when he powered to the front of the field and led for 180 miles until crashing on course and breaking a collarbone. We wish him better luck this time. If anyone in this year’s race has a chance at logging 500+ miles it’s Dizzy, which would put him among only 12 riders in the exclusive “500 Club,” an informal honor we bestow upon those who surpassed 500 miles at WTTC.

Before becoming an ultra-cyclist he competed in traditional road cycling at the highest amateur level, participating in events that sometimes combine top pros with amateurs and national team members. “There was never an ambition to get a pro license,” he told RAAM Media, which is understandable since he works full-time in banking. Amateur or not he’s had some impressive results—in 2009 he won the Luxembourg national time trial championship.

6-12-24 Hour World Time Trial Championships (WTTC)!  Every November the best endurance time trial racers from around the world gather in Borrego Springs, a quiet Southern California resort community.  They come to determine who is the fastest in the world, to set personal records, and to spend time with friends in the bicycle racing community.

Borrego Springs offers the perfect setting – the stark beauty of the Anza-Borrego Desert set against the majesty of the Coast Range.  Giant metal sculptures by Ricardo Breceda add to the beauty and add mystique.  Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular.  November weather should be ideal – warm days and cool nights – perfect for racing.

The course is flat and fast, featuring a main loop of 18.0 miles with 347’ of elevation change and a finishing loop of 4.8 miles with 63’ of elevation change.  County road crews prepare the road surface before the race, making repairs and sweeping to insure optimal conditions.  Racers compile as many miles as possible in 6, 12 or 24 hours.

The 6-12-24 Hour WTTC in Borrego Springs is the perfect way to close out the season.  Borrego Springs is very accessible – a short drive from the major population centers of Southern California – San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles.
